Today I’m writing to all fellow Baby Boomer Network Marketers, or anyone reading this article who has considered signing on with a Network Marketing company. But this is especially for those who are struggling to get their businesses off the ground or fighting just to make ends meet.

Times are tough. Some Boomers in the African American community, like so many other people, have had it rough in the last few years, especially financially. But we haven’t given up, not by a long shot because as the saying goes, “Where there’s a Will, There’s a Way.”

Lately some of us have taken matters into our own hands and started Network Marketing businesses with the hope of shoring up our retirement income.

Let’s face it, no matter how excited we are as we try to explain our business model, many people simply don’t understand how we do what we do, or exactly how our business works.

To add fuel to the fire of their disbelief, the sad fact is almost every one of those people has heard some horror story about Network Marketing. “Yes I know all about Network Marketing, my uncle Ned was in one of them pyramid schemes and he . . .”

I’m sure you’ve heard more than a few endings to that sentence. The word Pyramid or Scam almost always manages to rear its ugly head.

Therein, lying in wait, is their dormant natural skepticism, and as soon as we approach them with our “opportunity” their protective instincts kick in. Their subconscious screams at them!!

People have a natural self preservation mechanism to just say “NO!” to things they don’t understand, and I don’t blame them. I am the same way.

In addition, there are those who simply take great pleasure in knocking down or at the very least, chipping away at our wall of self esteem.

They have closed minds and no amount of prying is going to open them up to new ideas. In that type of circumstance I’d move on to someone more receptive.

As Grand Dad Used To Say, “There’s Hope Yet!”

Network Marketing by its very nature is built on the premise of people helping people. A true Network Marketer has a genuine desire to help others and strives to market products that do just that.

Looking For – That One Opportunity

Creating Vitality financially in today’s economic environment can help take the weight off mentally and eliminate a lot of anxiety and stress when it comes to meeting obligations.

We know that stress and worry will cause our bodies to suffer physically, so this article will be about one way (the way I chose, network marketing) that you can possibly take steps and begin to eliminate financial stress. Yes, I said possibly, because not all ‘opportunities’ fit all personalities.

So-Called Gurus

I have no respect for people who try to sell someone on the advantages of a product when they have not used it themselves, with some success, or at least know someone who has benefited from it.

There is so much misinformation (noise) being bandied about online these days that it is hard to know who to trust. Many pretenders shout from the mountain-tops, “Look at me, I’m an expert, a Guru,” when they haven’t made a dime in their fledgling venture.

My belief is you should walk the walk before you make outrageous claims of profits earned, in an effort to have someone sign on to your opportunity, but people do it all the time. A wise woman taught me that you must plant seeds before the harvest; crawl before you walk.

Trust

Trust is hard to come by. Genuine, verifiable trust takes a long time to build. Fly-by-night so-called “opportunities” come and go, usually with an unsuspecting “Prospect’s” hard-earned cash in hand.

That’s why it is so difficult for a legitimate, well-meaning, network marketer to make a decent living online. Because we believe in our products or services, many of us keep on pushing ahead and savor each victory, one at a time. There’s no better feeling than when a man or woman comes to you and thanks you for the positive difference you made in their life.

Opportunities Come Everyday

But we have to sort through the noise. If you put in the work, do your due diligence and keep searching, real opportunities will surface. Opportunities that will withstand the test of time and scrutiny.

Look for a company that has the following going for it.

• a solid reputation
• touts a solid management vision
• has great track record with its customers
• is debt free or at least is financially sound
• run by an owner with unquestioned integrity
• markets viable products that are affordable, and needed
• provides continuing education and tools to build your business

If you do look for these qualities and are relentless, you will eventually find a great match.

Investigate the Business Owner

When seeking out a business to invest your time and energy promoting, check out the owner. The owner’s vision is the basis for the whole organization. This gives you a benchmark of where the business has been and where it is headed.

One of the best ways he or she can communicate his or her vision is to have a story. Listen. Just as every movie or book has a premise, so should every business.

If you listen to the owner’s story, find yourself filled with the vision, see yourself in the picture he paints, you’ve found your match. Time for you to study the other bullet points so you too can become a great story teller and promote your business.

Remember, once you get the vision and are ready to move forward, education and tools alone will not create success. Your passion, enthusiasm, hard work and the quality of your story is what will make you a success in network marketing.

Don’t try to build Rome in a day. It’s impossible to work on the whole picture at once. Begin with a single brush stroke, at the bottom, and work your way to the top, from that foundation.

A Few Words of Caution

After you find a good fit and until you understand this industry, stay with one opportunity. Focus. Treat it like you are building a million dollar business, because you may well be.

Study every day, every week. Learn your product. Be patient. Associate with positive people who have the same goals and are willing to share their knowledge.

Baby Boomers We’re Not Done Yet!

Can you believe it! We Baby Boomers are actually getting (gasp!) older. But that doesn’t mean we are done. Not by a long shot.

Want proof? Check out Willard Scott on TV in the mornings that he pays tribute to centenarians. It seems Mr. Scott has a waiting list of eager participants who have reached the magic 100 years-young, five or more years ago. But check it out, we’re not done yet!

Boomers being true to form are taking getting older to another level. Getting older does not mean we’re done! We’re stepping it up a notch!

If you are one who will actually admit to watching television, you are bombarded with hundreds of images a day of 20 – 30 year-olds, who seemingly have taken over the airwaves. It’s like they’re saying, “Over 50, you’re Outta here!”

Well, as they say, “That was Then…”

Many of us have refused to accept the retirement standard and “fade gently into the night.”

Some Baby Boomers, like those centenarians of the previous generation, continue to raise the bar and buck the trends.

We Baby Boomers have now reached what in the not too distant past was considered retirement age, the age of the Golden ‘Get Outta Here’ Watch.

A less than hearty pat on the back during a hastily put together ‘going away’ party, a few jokes by the boss about how you won’t be missed, and it’s over. How do I know? I had one of them suckers . . . got the watch too!

Thing is, as you can see, I was the one in a hurry to get out of there.

.

I had things to do. Things that did not include fishing or golfing my life away. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with fishing or golfing . . . it’s just not me.

I had a new life waiting. And I must say, I have not been disappointed. Some of us choose not to retire. Retiring is so last generation. Like I heard a Boomer female announce a few weeks back, “I’m not done by a long shot.”

Look at the “comebacks” by Baby Boomer performers. Where’d they come back from? They never left! They just got on with their life, did other things in other places. Now they are back here doing new things or resurrecting old things making them new again.

My point is Baby Boomers aren’t making a “comeback”, because we never left.

Some of us, due to the recent downturn in the economy (it’s not politically correct to say Recession) are discovering new ways to be productive.

Some of us who faithfully worked for 30-plus years have lost our jobs due to businesses closing or filing bankruptcy mere months before we reached full retirement with benefits.

Then there is the ever popular technique of right-sizing and down-sizing, which are only non-confrontational ways of them saying, “YOU ARE …

.

What I’m saying is some of us have taken that opportunity to re-invent ourselves. We have made the attrition from working at a 9 to 5 job to small business ownership, mostly work-from-home types.

If you are one of us who has reworked the mold, congratulations! We’re not done yet. Not by a long shot. Have fun with it.

If you are intrigued by the possibilities, if it has been in the back of your mind for awhile, but you have yet to take the plunge to small business ownership, all I can say from experience is, go for it!

Pull, push or drag it to the front of your mind, make it a priority, jump on and try it out. As the saying goes, “Try it, You’ll Like It.” You just may surprise yourself.

I have found an excellent company to work with and I work it 99.9% online. No cold calling, no warm market hassles, no 3-foot rule. None of that.

I’m not saying it is a breeze by far. On the contrary, it takes work on your part. Nothing, however, that you cannot learn.

That 9 to 5 that left you out in the cold was work too, wasn’t it, but you learned it. Take control of your life. Next time you get left out in the cold, let it be because you CHOSE to go skiing or snow-boarding or skinny-dipping!

Apologies up front if this article comes off “salesy,” (is that a word?). But here we go. I’m going to put it out there.

As you know by now, I am an internet network marketing Baby Boomer. My company of choice is GBG. The name derives from, “Guided by God.”

We don’t hype it, but that’s where the name comes from, and our founder, Stuart Finger, is sincere about his conviction. The reason I’m telling it now is because I have been asked often recently, “What do the letters GBG mean?”

Most in our community haven’t heard of GBG, but that’s going to change, with a quickness. I am so proud of my friends and family who have taken charge of the ‘direction’ of their health. If I used such terminology, I’d say, “Kudos,” but I don’t.

Boomers are becoming more aware everyday when it comes to our health. Due to that awareness we are getting our diets in check, exercising more, getting good rest and investigating healthy alternatives, and that is where GBG shines.

We Baby Boomers have entered our retirement years; an era of which many of us are totally unprepared.

Even though a majority of us have reached retirement age, or are being forced out of our jobs early, we still need to supplement our income.

Downsized, Rightsized, Capsized; these are names companies use to soften the word fired. Many of us have been dismissed by companies that promised to ‘take care of us’ if we worked for 30+ years.

While we should be relaxing in the sunshine of our ‘Golden Years’ some are looking for new employment, wondering if they will ever enjoy any semblance of retirement.

I live in a state where generations of hardworking families worked for textile mills that have shut down or moved out of state.

Now what do these people do?

Many have resorted to competing with teens for a minimum wage. That’s fine if what you want is another J.O.B. (Just Over Broke).

Many who worked for thirty years, worried about bills, had too much month at the end of the money and lived with the reality that we were one check away from desperation. Trust me, I’ve been there.

There is a Solution to Underemployment

As Baby Boomers we have been known to ‘fix it’ when a challenge comes along and I have found a way to ‘fix’ my lack of finances.

Within the last three years I have totally changed professions. I am now a Network Marketer.

I just lost some readers because Network Marketing is not for everyone, but I truly believe in this industry. Unfortunately some people with no knowledge of the profession prejudge and miss an opportunity for financial freedom.

It takes being open to new information. You’re still reading so you understand that.

When it comes to Network Marketing many of us have a bad taste in our mouth. Some Network Marketer may have botched a presentation, made lofty promises, or left us hanging after we signed on with him.

Maybe we joined a disreputable company, lost a lot of money and vowed ‘never again.’ There are many reasons Network Marketing has a negative image. Those reasons have kept us from exploring a perfectly legitimate profession and that’s a big mistake.

Find the Right Company …

… and the right mentor and you can achieve your dreams, even those that have been put on hold.

My aim is to provide Boomers and others the direction to achieve their financial and natural health goals, allowing them to be financially independent within a few years by applying basic techniques.

I’m not going to lie and claim Network Marketing is ‘Get Rich Quick’ or for everyone, but if you feel it may be for you, I urge you to check it out.

Many network marketing companies are not set up with the little guy in mind; the person who has never owned a business or has any clue of how to begin.

Those companies are geared toward successful network marketers who understand the dynamics of network marketing. They’ve been around the block, so to speak.

Many of them usually have teams in place from years of doing business and just shift those team members from one company into another, making a ton of money along the way.

The usual hype in the weekly meeting is ANYONE can have the same success in a short amount of time.

The truth is the majority of network marketers, in their entire career with one company, will recruit 1 to 4 people into their team, usually family members and friends. That’s it.

When they have to go outside of their comfort zone, they falter, fade away and eventually quit.

That is why so many (97%) have failed in this business. They were destined to failure before they even signed up.

The big boys and girls know this. The superstars. They know it is a numbers game. They know the majority will quit within months, but their teams are so large they usually won’t feel the pain of a few who quit.

But it does not have to be that way. There are companies out here that are sensitive to the needs of the little guy who has a burning desire to succeed.

Remember what I said in the beginning? Now is a great time to get into this business.

Jobs are falling by the wayside;

Company executives who don’t have the guts of a man like Donald Trump have actually come up with less offensive names for the word Fired.

Now-a-days people are being downsized, right-sized, outsized and capsized.

If you are not aware of the problems in our nation’s economy, you probably don’t need a job or a business. You’re probably already independently wealthy.

This is for those of us who want and need a change; a change in our finances; a change in our lifestyle; a change in our attitude.

Our president constantly tells us, it’s time for change. Well Its time for us to listen; and not just listen; its time for us to ACT.

Many of us now are looking for an opportunity to make more money; to gain wealth.

Hello again, and welcome back. I hope you will bear with me.

Today’s article is going to be in three parts. I’m going to talk about why I’m finally proud to say I am an Internet Marketer. It was not always this way.

I also want to talk about why right now is one of the better times to get involved with a network marketing opportunity.

Yeah, I know, some people just stopped reading, saying, “I’ve heard it all before.” If that’s the case, so be it. This industry is not for everyone.

When many people hear about a network marketing so-called opportunity, they immediately conjure up thoughts about the entire industry, usually negative thoughts.

These are people who heard the stories, or rather lies, of how much money could be made, how they would be rich by a week from Tuesday and their financial problems would be solved

They would hurriedly join, not have a clue of what to do, have no real guidance because of the way most network marketing companies are structured, find out it was all a pipe-dream, and quit within months if not weeks.

And let’s be realistic, most people do initially join a network marketing company, because plain and simply, they need more money; not because they get so caught up in the great products or services that they just HAVE to tell everyone about.

Then there’s the other negative. The people who have covered the entire industry, all network marketing companies, under what they mistakenly call a pyramid, or better yet a pyramid SCHEME! I guess adding the word scheme makes it more sinister to the folks who are uneducated about what a

REAL network marketing company is. A company that is legitimate, from the ground up.

A legitimate network marketing opportunity is by far not a pyramid scheme.

Most of the negativity though, comes from people who have joined network marketing companies, and for many different reasons they have failed miserably.

Some lost money because they had to purchase goods that ended up in the back of their closet or stacked in the garage, because they were directly competing with big box discount retailers.

Some lost friends and family members because they chased them down and figuratively beat them over the head with their great product or service until they gave up and bought in to the plan, only to quit the first chance they got.

I’m speaking from experience here. I did it just like that; just like I was taught. I went for the hype because I was naïve. My friends hated to see me coming.

I don’t need to go on and on about the negatives because there are as many horror stories as there are people who have failed at the business.

I’m sure you’ve heard a few your self.

The Truth is Out

Below is an email concerning network marketing that my up-line sent out to his staff back in May 2007.

He was seeking input from them and answers to an ongoing problem that was not readily shared with the rest of us when we were recruited.

I’m not sure if he crafted the letter, he was known to copy and paste (would that be…plagiarize?) entire articles.

Thing is, he sent it out to some of his down-line by mistake. I was a happy recipient and wrote back to tell him so. Applauded him for being honest. The accolades followed by, what could we do as a team to improve the situation.

By Design or by Accident?

He never responded and actively avoided me at meetings, didn’t return phone calls, etc., so I’ll go out on a limb and assume it was by accident that I got a copy.

At the time I received the misdirected email I was seeking a method of operation that would work for my particular mind-set.

I had no intention of quitting the business, just modifying my recruiting and sales techniques; something more in keeping with my demeanor. No single technique works for all networkers because we all have different personalities.

In his words here is the letter in its entirety minus his name and email address.

*Many Networkers ask why the media and NW detractors pick on the 95% drop-out rate of our industry, when ‘everyone else’ has big failure rates too…

Yes, other businesses also have big failure rates. But here’s why we’re a favorite target:

In every recruiting presentation, we sell, hard, three things (and end with a question)

• 1) how easy and simple it is to make money
• 2) how anyone can do it
• 3) how everyone does network marketing every day when we recommend movies and restaurants
• 4) What could be easier than doing that and getting paid for it?

In thousands of hotel rooms and other locales across the USA each week, that’s the pitch; those are the promises.

When it turns out most people (95%+) fail to make anything, and actually lose money instead, what do you expect?

(Of) those 95% who believed, 1 out of 3 are distraught, their families are upset and their friends ridicule them for having been ’suckered in’ by one of those network marketing things.

And the beat goes on. Every day across the USA, in hundreds of opportunity meetings, recruiters pitch this same BS over and over. And with this same deceptive pitch, they continue to sucker in ever more people who have no idea what it takes to get a business like this off the ground, and who, like everyone else, are eager to earn extra money or a quick way to wealth.

It takes a lot more to get a small-business venture off the ground than an inspiring hotel presentation.

But in our industry, the leaders and presenters all deny it with the pitches they continue to foist on unsuspecting and naive folks. When 95% fail and lose money, and have been for the last 20+ years, how else do you expect others to react?

This man is by all appearances extremely successful in his network marketing niche. What’s funny to me is he never changed his ‘pitch’ when conducting meetings. Up until the time I quit the company he continued to feed the prospects, in his words, ‘this same BS over and over.’

Well, I eventually left the company, but was grateful for the lessons I had learned. I still use the product I just don’t market it.

And I found my niche as far as my own marketing technique. I am happy and content with my method of operation. It is built on honesty, a great company and needed products.

What I had found immediately before his email erupted onto the scene was the teachings of a respected network marketer. I sent him the information, but as I said, no response. His old method works for him but it does nothing for me.
